Al Dhafra Camel beauty contest

Al Dhafra is a small town west of Abu Dhabi. The Camel Beauty Contest (Mazayna) is one of the authentic traditions in the region and it reflects the feelings of pride and prestige. The Festival, which began on December 22 and lasts for two weeks, is now on its seventh year and also features horse and dog races, a falconry competition, auctions, markets and other activities showcasing the UAE’s culture and folklore. The judges are looking for big heads, wide necks, firm ears, broad cheeks and big, big whiskers. The colour and posture of the camel are also important.

The Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is located in Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. The Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the UAE and the eighth largest in the world. Being the country’s grand mosque it is the key place for Eid and Friday prayers. The design and the construction of the mosque “unites the world”, using materials and artisans from many countries like Italy, Germany, Morocco, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Malaysia, Iran, China, UK, New Zealand, Greece and the UAE. Marble stone, gold, semi-precious stones, crystals and ceramics where used in the construction due to its long-lasting qualities.

The design of the Sheikh Zayed mosque has been inspired by Mughal ( an amalgam of Islamic, Persian, Turkish and Indian) and Moorish (Berber-Islamic and Hispano Islamic) mosque architecture. The Badashahi Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan and the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco had a direct influence on the design of the mosque. It archways are quintessentially Moorish and its minarets classically  Arab. The architecture of the mosque be best described as a fusion of Arab, Mughal and Moorish.

Dubai workers

Dubai workers… I like to acknowledge the workers in the UAE… They work very hard all year around. The workers are  outside when the temperatures in Dubai reach  up to 50 degrees. During summer everyone stays inside with  air-condition at maximum 22 degrees… but not these men. In winter  they are in  luck because temperatures are at a fantastic 26 degrees or less.
